Notes on a non-academic job search OK, so the academic job market isn't great right now. What can you do about it? Having worked in software for a decade before grad school, and now going back into (a different) industry after graduation, I can tell you there are a lot of interesting things to do in the corporate and laboratory worlds -- whether you're currently in the pure or applied program. Jobs are also tight outside academia, to be sure -- but why not expand your options? I'll talk about plusses and minuses of working outside academia, how to start preparing now (even if you don't graduate for a few years), employers and how to find them, timelines, and application and interview techniques.
